ASETS Business Plan

The FNI ASETS Strategic Business Plan outlines the Federation of Newfoundland Indians’ (FNI) approach to enhancing employment and training opportunities for its members through the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS). The plan highlights the FNI’s mandate to support the economic, social, and educational advancement of its members, particularly in response to growing labor market demands in Newfoundland and Labrador. With the anticipated transition to the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band (QMFNB), the FNI aims to expand its service delivery to a broader membership, addressing unemployment and workforce development challenges. The strategy focuses on key economic sectors, including energy, mining, construction, and fisheries, while forming partnerships with government agencies, educational institutions, and private-sector employers to provide training, wage subsidies, and employment placements.

A major component of the plan is the emphasis on increasing Indigenous participation in skilled trades and emerging industries. The FNI aims to develop a labor force database to track skills within its membership, enhance career counseling services, and expand training opportunities tailored to labor market demands. The business plan also outlines efforts to improve internal capacity, streamline service delivery, and strengthen communication strategies to engage members effectively. With funding from Service Canada, provincial agencies, and industry partners, the plan sets out a roadmap for sustainable employment growth and economic self-sufficiency for Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. By aligning with national employment trends and provincial workforce needs, the FNI seeks to position its members for long-term success in a competitive job market.
