Bonavista STAR Project

The Bonavista STAR Project Final Report presents a comprehensive Strategic Regional Tourism Plan for the Bonavista Peninsula, developed through extensive consultations and research under the Strategic Tourism for Areas and Regions (STAR) program. The plan identifies six strategic recommendations, and thirty actions aimed at enhancing the region’s tourism industry from 2019 to 2023. Key priorities include extending the tourism season, improving regional marketing with a strong online presence, supporting non-profit tourism organizations, and addressing infrastructure and human resource challenges. The plan also emphasizes collaboration among stakeholders, sustainable funding, and the need for a unified tourism brand that aligns with Newfoundland and Labrador’s broader tourism strategy.
The report outlines a visitor profile, highlighting the region’s appeal to educated, affluent travelers seeking cultural and natural experiences. It underscores the importance of targeted marketing, season-extension efforts, and strategic investments in key attractions like the Elliston Puffin Ecological Site and the Discovery Aspiring Geopark. The plan proposes the formation of a Regional Tourism Action Team (RTAT) led by the Bonavista Trinity Regional Chamber of Commerce to oversee implementation, ensure sustainable funding, and facilitate cooperation among tourism operators. The plan aims to position the Bonavista Peninsula as a top-tier rural tourism destination, leveraging its rich history, cultural assets, and scenic landscapes to drive economic growth
